Europe by Train: The Complete 2026 Eurail Pass Guide

Save hundreds of euros and see the best of the continent by rail. Here's everything you need to know about Eurail passes.

Europe by Train: The Complete 2026 Eurail Pass Guide

There's something magical about European train travel. You leave from city center, arrive at city center, watch countryside roll past your window, and have room to walk around, grab a coffee, or simply enjoy the view. After three months crisscrossing Europe by rail, I'm convinced there's no better way to travel the continent.

Why Train Over Flight?

  • City center to city center: No €50 taxi from budget airport locations
  • No security lines: Walk on 10 minutes before departure
  • Generous luggage: No weight limits, no fees
  • The journey itself: Alpine passes, coastal views, historic stations
  • Environmental: Up to 80% lower carbon emissions than flying

How the Mobile Pass Works

  1. Purchase online: Buy your pass from eurail.com
  2. Download the app: The Eurail app is your ticket, planner, and travel diary
  3. Activate before first trip: Enter passport details. You have 11 months from purchase to activate.
  4. Add journeys: Before boarding any train, add your journey in the app to "use" a travel day
  5. Generate QR code: This is your ticket. Conductors scan it.

Understanding Travel Days

A "travel day" runs from midnight to midnight. During those 24 hours, you can take unlimited trains. Strategy: pack multiple trains into one day.

Night train tip: If your train departs after 7 PM and arrives the next morning, it only counts as one travel day (the departure day).

Reservations: The Hidden Cost

Your Eurail pass covers the fare, but some trains require paid seat reservations:

  • High-speed trains: TGV (France), AVE (Spain), Frecciarossa (Italy), ICE (Germany) — €5-30
  • Scenic trains: Glacier Express, Bernina Express — €20-50
  • Night trains: Nightjet, Caledonian Sleeper — €20-100+ depending on cabin type
  • Eurostar: €30-38 pass holder rate (limited seats, book weeks ahead)

No reservation needed: Regional trains, most German/Dutch trains, many local services.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Take regional trains: Skip the reservation fees. Paris to Lyon via TER is slower but free with your pass.
  • Book reservations on national sites: Select "Interrail/Eurail" as your discount to get pass holder rates.
  • Night trains = double savings: Save on accommodation AND transportation.
  • Compare with point-to-point: For 2-3 fixed routes, individual tickets might be cheaper. The pass wins for flexible, multi-city trips.
  • Fill your travel days: Multiple trains in one day maximizes value.

Best Night Train Routes

  • Nightjet Vienna → Rome: Wake up in Italy. Private cabins available.
  • European Sleeper Brussels → Berlin: New route, excellent service.
  • Nightjet Munich → Venice: Alpine scenery at dawn.
  • La Renfe Barcelona → Paris: Direct overnight connection.

Pro Tips

  • Download offline: The app needs internet every 3 days, but works offline in between.
  • Keep passport ready: Conductors may check ID alongside your QR code.
  • Check platform carefully: Trains sometimes split—make sure your carriage goes to your destination.
  • Board quickly: Station stops can be short, especially on regional routes.
  • First class worth it? Usually not. Second class is comfortable. Exception: Eurostar, where first class includes meals.

European trains aren't just transportation—they're part of the experience. Watching the French countryside blur past with a coffee in hand, waking up in a new country after a night train, meeting fellow travelers in the dining car. Some of my best travel memories happened between destinations. Don't just rush through—enjoy the journey.
